That was "Too Clever By Half"...

It's been a week since we finished, and I finally have the time to talk about how the show went. I would have done so sooner, but the last week has just been hell and I've needed to spend my evenings relaxing by doing as little as possible, rather than looking at another computer screen, so it's taken me a while.

And it went very well as it goes. The final dress and tech rehearsals over the weekend were relatively painless. I personally found them a lot less dull than previous tech runs, but I think that is simply down to the fact that in playing the main role I was involved for most things, so didn't have the opportunity. In the whole play there were very few times I wasn't on stage or waiting to go on stage, so I was not forced to endure hours of sitting in the the green room waiting to be needed, as I have often in the past.

The show itself was great fun. Having never had a main part in a show before it was fun to one be involved all through the play and two, or be able to play with a single character in such depth. Playing random odd characters is fun, but it's a totally different experience getting to sink your teeth into something properly. Add to that the fact that he was an evil bastard and great fun to play and I was havung great fun from start to finish.

My highlights; my separate scenes with Tim and Rez, simply for the huge amount of fun it was playing off the two of them. With Tim is was just a wonderful moment of slow burning comedy. I was pleased with myself on opening night when I decided to drag out a certain bit longer than I had done in rehearsals, as it worked perfectly. Some nights better than others, but all audiences are different. With Rez it was just huge fun over acting against each other, two characters with an infallible belief in their own greatness. And of course you could not fail to mention a scene which ended with me hitting my wife over the head with a chair. I'm hoping that looked convincing. Stage violence can look so fake if you're not careful. I did have wonderful images of having a break away chair that would shatter on impact, but there as limits to an amateur theatre company budget.

I'm going to really miss this show. It's the first Purple show since A Slice Of Saturday Night that I could quite happily have continued doing indefinitely, rather than the usual feeling of looking forward to having my evenings and weekends back, despite how much I might be enjoying the show.

Plus we passed the break even point, and so made a profit. Win. See you all at By Jeeves.

Didn’t get a chance to have a chat with you at the after show party so just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your performance in 2CBH. On a scale of 1-10 your evil laugh was an 11 (It’s one eviller!) The ‘chair’ scene has been one of my favourites from the very start, and I just loved the way it was played. And I’ve always felt the second half was a stronger piece of writing (but I’m only the author, what do I know?) especially “Boudoir Of Death” so I’m thrilled you had so much fun with it. Rez and Frankie really nailed the Count and Kitty, too. I’d really liked to have seen the whole thing again straight after – only without the nervous trembling!!
